4 Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

Types of Cosmetic Dentistry

There are a number of different types of cosmetic dentistry, and each one can be used to enhance or improve a different aspect of your smile. Many of us find that we are shy or embarrassed about our smiles, and cosmetic dentistry can be a great way to overcome this. Here, we take a look at some of the most common types of cosmetic dentistry and how they can help improve your smile.

1. Dental Implants

Dental implants are a type of cosmetic dentistry that is often used to replace teeth after tooth loss. To fit a dental implant, your dentist will insert a small titanium screw into your jaw bone, this screw is then used to hold a custom-made crown in place in the spot where your missing tooth should be.  You will usually find that dental implants are almost indistinguishable from your natural teeth and have a similar biting strength to your natural teeth. With dental implants, you will also be able to bite and chew foods that you may not have been able to with your missing tooth. You will need to have good oral hygiene during the time period leading up to your procedure so that you can keep the area clear of plaque and food debris.

2. Orthodontics

Another common type of cosmetic dentistry is orthodontics. Orthodontics is the use of braces to straighten or move teeth that are crowded, spaced out or in completely the wrong place. You will find that after treatment not only will your smile be straighter, but it will also be easier to clean and keep healthy. This can help reduce the risk of developing gum disease or tooth decay. Your bite will also significantly improve as this type of cosmetic dentistry can also improve the position of your jaw.

3. Teeth Whitening

One of the most basic and common types of cosmetic dentistry. Whilst there are a number of teeth whitening products available on the market, you should always make sure that your whitening product is provided by a registered dentist. Many of the whitening treatments that can be found online won’t work as well as whitening treatments carried out by your dentist and many can also be hugely unsafe. You should have your whitening treatment after plaque, tartar and other debris have been cleaned from the surface of your teeth, otherwise, the procedure won’t work. Over time, your teeth can become stained by foods, drinks, smoking and plaque build-up, so whitening is a great way to brighten your smile and reboot your confidence.

4. Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are made by placing a wafer-thin layer of tooth coloured porcelain to the surface of your natural teeth. Your dentist will often need to file your natural teeth down a small amount in order to place the veneer. Veneers are a great way to improve the shape, size and shade of your teeth and are often referred to as the ‘gold-standard’ of cosmetic dentistry.
